Created by members of some of Sacramento’s hardest working local bands, Korean Fire Drill (because Chinese was already taken), also known as KFD, started off as 3 guys jamming out their first 3 songs on the first day they met. Coining the band’s name along with the motto HALFASS IS BADASS, KFD had immediately and unknowingly set out to become California’s go to Comedy Hard Rock act.
KFD released their debut, full length album, rightfully titled Halfass Is Badass in 2014. Every song has the appearance of an excellent “rock out” song until you actually look at the lyrics and see what they’re really talking about; songs about temples to simply damaging your manhood in your zipper.
Two years into their adventure KFD recruited local veteran Lydia Gavin to be their 4th member, and on many occasions KFD also recruits Go Go Dancer Chelsea Boac to dance it out during their sets. Every show KFD puts on is a new adventure, since every time they go on stage they utilize different costume themes and props; they've gone on as Ghostbusters, Nuns, Average Joes Gym, Mario Bros, South Park, and many more.
KFD is getting ready to release their sophomore, self produced, album More Badass Than Half Ass, featuring 8 explosive and diverse originals, 4 fantastic covers/remakes, 12 skits, and 1 secret track, all complete with artwork to fit by the band as well. Leading the charge, unexpectedly, is their Hard Rock charged rendition of Tupac and Dr. Dre's "California Love". Once again, not realizing they’re doing it, KFD is about to embark on conquering the U.S and beyond. KFD is always a very upbeat, powerful, and party filled band great for stages large and small.
“KFD is that band you didn’t see coming but couldn’t help but check out. The name itself makes you wonder what you’re in for, and then the music hits and you're like ‘hell yeah, this is awesome music’, then finally you start to realize what we’re actually singing about and you can’t help but laugh and go ‘wait what?!’ haha. We always have a party prepared.” - HazMatt
"There aren't any boundaries when it comes to writing in this band, which is what I believe gives KFD a unique creative spin. While everyone else in the industry is penning super serious songs about love and breakups, we're over here writing super serious songs about our love for chili dogs and beer. Or, why Carl should go fuck himself.” - LydVish
We all know Christmas is an enchanting time and one of giving…and Portland has a special giver in its midst in Jason Iffert. Most of you know Jason as a great tattoo artist at 7 Zodiacs Tattoo shop, but I found out tonight that he is a really cool guy. Not only is he putting on one of the most bad-ass Metal Fests of 2016, he is adding to the enchantment of the season by giving a very big gift to the children of Shriners Children’s Hospital. He’s done it for years…giving toys to organizations such as Doernbechers Hospital and Shriners Children’s Hospital, and it is apparent that he truly does it out of love.
This two-day mega show not only has one of the most intense lineups of hard to get bands on its roster, but all proceeds from the door will go to Shriners Children’s Hospital. I sat down with Jason and found out more about his amazing benefit. “Not only do I love children, but it is a great excuse to get all of my friends together to see my favorite bands. I have the utmost respect for Shriners Children’s Hospital, and I want to always give back in memory of my son Layne.”
Jason has been doing fundraisers through his work for years. Many years back, when his son was a senior in high school, his son asked if he could coordinate a fundraiser for Shriners Children’s Hospital for a school project. “He did so well. He made all of the arrangements himself and it was a great success. I was so proud of him and he got a great grade.” Three years ago, Jason lost his son Layne in a car accident. This benefit, that they once did together, is not only a great cause, but a great opportunity to remember this amazing young man and his life.
Starting on Black Friday through a few days before Christmas, with the gift of an unwrapped toy, you can buy a gift certificate at 50% from 7 Zodiacs Tattoo. This year, in addition to the tradition, Jason added the element of metal into the mix.
I asked Jason how he got such significant bands such as Wehrmacht, Jahai, Hyperthermia, Proven, Desmodus, Critic, Kingdom Under Fire, Separation of Sanity, and Spawn. “I just put feelers out, and they all said yes, and all of the bands are donating their time to the cause.”
I asked how he managed to specifically get Wehrmacht. “I called my friends in Wehrmacht and figured they would be booked. But to my surprise, they said yes; that they would love to give back, especially to an organization such as Shriners. Getting Wehrmacht is a big deal…they will be playing ‘Biermacht’ in its entirety on the first day of the benefit. This will be amazing to see.”
I asked Jason why he named the benefit South East Metal Fest 1.5. “We’ve already put on one metal fest in 2016; it was just a few months ago…so I decided on 1.5 rather than 2. Plus 1.5 sounds sort of nerdy and cool, like a software update!”
In response to why he chose Shriners as the beneficiary again this year: “Shriners are good people. They are very accommodating and appreciative, and they do very good things.”
This is how you can participate:
Come to the show on December 9th and/or 10th.
Pay $10 per day or $15 for both days.
Bring an unwrapped toy with you and get $2.00 off the entrance fee.
If you would like, you can donate any amount at the benefit directly.
Go to 7 Zodiacs Tattoo and bring a toy with a value of at least $20 and you can buy a certificate for 50% off. (Certificates will be available at the show as well.)
This is how the donation will be given to Shriners Children’s Hospital:
Jason and a group of band members that he will assemble will take all of the proceeds from the benefit and meet up at Toys R Us. They will then purchase gifts for both girls and boys. “We will have car loads of toys. Shriners has a big room that we hope to fill. They will give the toys out to children who enter their doors throughout the year, including Christmas, until they run out.”
With this dream lineup, it is a show that you will not want to miss just purely on the awesomeness of band roster alone. Combine that fact with the opportunity to get a sweet deal on a tattoo…and that makes it even more enticing. Knowing you are giving back to an amazing organization…well, that will just make your heart feel happy. So, come. All your friends will be there.
